The trick works this way: There you are, utilizing your PC quite recently like whatever other day, when all of a sudden a fly up shows up, notice you that your PC has been contaminated by an infection and you have to call technical support promptly.
On the off chance that you endeavor to dispose of the fly up, it just continues returning. On the off chance that you do call the asserted technical support number, you’re associated with telemarketers who claim to be subsidiary with significant innovation organizations – yet are truly tricksters endeavoring to bilk clients for expensive and superfluous PC repairs or administrations.
When the Federal Trade Commission announced a major crackdown on these scammers last month, it was relying in part on the work of a group of Microsoft researchers and Digital Crimes Unit investigators who used artificial intelligence to help unravel the complex web of technical tricks the scammers were using to swindle users and avoid law enforcement.
The scammers weren’t easy to track down.
“These people are very clever,” said Chris White, a principal researcher at Microsoft’s Redmond, Washington, research lab who collaborated with the company’s Digital Crimes Unit to help track down the scammers.
And they were becoming a real headache for users.
Microsoft’s Digital Crimes Unit, which tracks and prevents cybercrime, receives at least 10,000 complaints a month from around the world about pop-up ads and telemarketers claiming to be legitimate tech support representatives. In general, the scam is more likely to start with a pop-up ad than a phone call, but there are regional exceptions. In Germany, for example, 85 percent of complaints were about tech scams that originated with a phone call.
The majority of the complaints appear to be coming from people 50 and older, but younger users aren’t immune. About 30 percent of the people who filed a complaint and gave their age said they were under age 49, according to the latest data from the Digital Crimes Unit.
Because not everyone reports an attempted attack, experts believe the total number of complaints represents only a small fraction of the people targeted by the scams.
Using AI running in the cloud to find scams The reports from customers were helpful, but the team was still having trouble catching what White calls the “biggest fish” – the masterminds behind some of these large-scale operations.
That’s because the victims may only have limited information to help in the investigation, such as a phone number that’s been disconnected. Also, few victims capture screen shots of the original scam pop-up.
Finally, the scammers themselves are very good at compartmentalizing their business, separating the telemarketing operation from people building the pop-ups.
“We had a bunch of customers who were reporting scams but didn’t know who scammed them,” said Courtney Gregoire, assistant general counsel for the Digital Crimes Unit.
To catch the scammers, Microsoft sleuths first had to figure out where the attacks were coming from – no easy task, since they often only used an IP address, or virtual home, for a day or less before moving on to another location to avoid being caught.
To find them, the team created a model that looked for content that behaved in a way that was consistent with the scam, such as creating a pop-up that refreshed in microseconds to give the appearance it wasn’t going away. Then, the team scoured the web for those sites and captured screen shots of all the content that could potentially be a scam.
It would be impractical, if not impossible, to manually scan through the hundreds of thousands of questionable pieces of content they found, so the team turned to a branch of AI called machine learning to sort the data.
With machine learning, a system can learn to recognize something – such as similar words or images – as it’s given more data that shows what it’s looking for. With this project, the team used custom AI tools, running on Microsoft’s Azure cloud computing platform, to look for image similarity, content and other visual clues that would determine the chances that the pop-up was relevant to the fraud investigation.
Then, they used the computer vision API from Microsoft Cognitive Services to scan the ads for phone numbers and other bits of information that could provide clues as to their origin.
Without AI tools and cloud computing, White said they would likely have had to approach the problem slowly and manually, using thousands of employees to document complaints and try to manually figure out whether the data they’d gathered pointed to a pattern.
With the technology, they were able to more quickly track the fast-moving scammers and devote investigator time to higher value work, like finding the connections that could lead to those big fish.
“What we’re able to do is address the problem at the scale it’s happening, and provide the mechanisms for us to do something about it,” White said.
Making data understandable The AI tools made their job faster, less costly and more precise, but then White and his team had another challenge: How to present their findings in such a way that lawyers and non-tech experts could understand it and decide what action to take.
White has had past involvement with this test. Prior in his profession, he’d been sent to Afghanistan to utilize information investigation to help with the U.S. protection methodology there. On the ground, he understood that his information wouldn’t help much unless he could figure out how to exhibit it that seemed well and good to commanders rather than PC researchers. He took in the estimation of visual devices, for example, diagrams and charts.
With the technical support trick, the group expected to make their discoveries justifiable to legal counselors and law implementation authorities. To do that, they utilized an information perception apparatus called Power BI to make intelligent, straightforward outlines and information representations. The information examination helped law requirement comprehend examples, for example, how old the clients were, what geographic ranges the tricksters were focusing on and which approaches they were taking in those zones.
The discoveries helped the FTC in its crackdown, and it additionally helped government authorities show signs of improvement feeling of how the issue was influencing individuals..
In the mean time, the con artists are continually searching for new techniques to trick clients and abstain from getting got, which implies White and the Digital Crimes Unit are proceeding to enhance their strategies for following and battling them. Gregoire said the organization has a solid sense of duty regarding proceeding to battle these tricks.
“We have a business enthusiasm for doing this, and we have a worldwide decent enthusiasm for doing this,” Gregoire said.
Other applications The AI and data analysis tools Microsoft is using to track down tech support scammers are similar to the ones that White and his team are using for other applications that require people to scan large amounts of what’s known as unstructured data – things like websites – to look for patterns.
For example, the team has used similar AI tools, combined with Power BI, to help people without technical expertise create systems that can scan online news and social media to understand patterns that may affect their company or organization.
White will be discussing the work his team is doing to help people make sense of big sets of data at the Data Summit in Dublin, Ireland this week.
For White and other researchers, it’s exciting to see the AI technologies and data analysis that were confined to research labs become available and useful to anyone.

Mellicia Marx is in the business of transformation. She runs Poplin Style Direction, a personal styling business that ensures a client’s look is on point. She’s helped new mothers revive their wardrobes, and other clients dress for new office environments confidently. “I love watching people transform,” she says.
Mellicia helps people understand which garments best complement their shape, personality and lifestyle. She teaches them how to shop, what to wear and how to wear it. Mellicia finds the secret style sauce that elevates each client.
Polishing a business’s image
Mellicia also knows that the success of her business depends on styling, too. The look and feel of her business and good communication with clients are key to growth. Through her website, she introduces clients to the styling process and options, and provides a private client access area where she shares personalized advice with each client. The website also includes her blog, the “voice” of her business, where she offers styling advice that has proven to be a powerful tool for attracting clients.
Mellicia finds Microsoft Word to be invaluable to maintaining her online presence because it makes it easy to share information with her web designer for needed updates. “Word is user-friendly,” she says. “You can figure out everything you need to do in five minutes or less.” She also spends a lot of time traveling between clients, and Microsoft Officemobile apps help her keep business moving when she’s not at her desk. “I have Office on my iPad Mini, so I can view and make edits to a document and respond to my designer or other contractors quickly.”
Structuring work-life balance
While rewarding in its freedom and creativity, being an entrepreneur can also make it more challenging to find work-life balance. Mellicia’s business is built on relationships, and nurturing them takes time. Efficiency in her personal life is crucial. “Word helps me organize our home life,” she explains. For example, she uses Word tables to organize her son’s activities, and to coordinate with the families of his friends who do the same activities or camps. “It keeps us all on the same page.”
Weaving retailer data with client needs
The amount of data involved in styling can be overwhelming. “I share a giant, complex spreadsheet with a contract stylist. We use it to track brands, online retailers and boutiques,” Mellicia says. “My Microsoft Excel sheet is a vital resource.”
The spreadsheet contains information Mellicia can use for clients, and in her blog and social media posts. It includes trend, sizing and style data categorized by brand and retailer. “Excel lets us easily sort this information depending on the task at hand,” she says. For example, she uses the split planes feature of Excel to focus on a single client and see which retailers may carry a needed item. She also easily searches the data to find a specific size or trend item. “It would be impossible for me to track this information without Excel.”
Mellicia and the contract stylist share the spreadsheet online, so the information can be updated easily by either of them. “It’s exciting to open up the spreadsheet and rediscover retailers or brands I may have forgotten about,” she explains. “More resources for me means more resources for clients—and all in all, it lets me do my job better.”
Mellicia’s also considered some of the newer features in Excel, like Maps. “This could become useful for our marketing,” she says. “With Excel Power Maps, I could plot client locations and use this information to create Facebook ads targeted to those areas or host an event where a concentration of clients is located.”
Giving back with panache
Despite her busy schedule, Mellicia finds time to give back as an entrepreneur. She volunteers with YouthCare, a nonprofit that provides services, education and training to homeless youth. Mellicia hosts styling sessions for youths, ages 16–24. “I help them translate the authenticity of their personal style to clothes that are appropriate for job interviews and work,” she explains.
Mellicia uses Microsoft PowerPoint to give presentations at YouthCare. “It’s great for these kids to be exposed to business tools like PowerPoint,” she says. “Also, my whole team of volunteers uses it—so if I can’t make it to a presentation, any one of them can take over and run the show.”
Just as a bold wardrobe is built on basics, Mellicia relies on Office as a foundation for her business. Whether it’s communicating with colleagues; organizing, sorting and analyzing retailer data; or presenting fashion concepts in her volunteer work, Office is her go-to technology. “I can’t control what software my contractors or clients use, or their level of comfort with different technologies—so it’s especially important I use tools that are easy for anyone,” she says. “Office offers that and more. It lets me spend my time on work that matters—providing great style options for my clients.”

Microsoft has reported that its Workplace Analytics include is currently accessible for ms office 365 venture clients as an extra, expecting to support worker efficiency – however perhaps offering ascend to a few worries about precisely how staff individuals can be checked.
The fundamental thought of Workplace Analytics is that it takes metadata from Office 365 email and timetables and crunches that information, transforming it into what Microsoft calls behavioral measurements.
At the end of the day, the examination arrangement takes information on who is sending messages where and when, and furthermore for any semblance of planned gatherings by means of logbooks, consequently offering bits of knowledge on how staff are investing their energy, what number of gatherings they are going to et cetera – with a view to utilizing this data to expand efficiency levels.
Fortune supports the broke down
All things considered, Workplace Analytics obviously offers some level of understanding into singular execution, as Microsoft refers to illustrations demonstrating this is the situation. For example, there is specify of the business office in a Fortune 500 firm utilizing the framework to recognize the ‘community oriented examples’ of best entertainers, including the measure of time they go through with clients.
Those practices were then received by whatever is left of the business society, bringing about helped figures for the organization being referred to.
As TechCrunch, which recognized this advancement, notes, there is then the hypothetical plausibility of having the capacity to pinpoint less gainful staff individuals as opposed to the best weapons of particular divisions, however Microsoft figures that not one organization in the private beta went down this course.
Despite the fact that it is not necessarily the case this couldn’t occur later on, obviously…
Kathleen Hogan, boss individuals officer at Microsoft, remarked: “Our HR Business Insights bunch is utilizing Workplace Analytics over an assortment of activities – from understanding the practices driving expanded representative engagement, to distinguishing the characteristics of best performing administrators who are driving Microsoft’s social change from inside. We trust individuals examination is a focused need for any HR group.”

Key innovation is a piece of FedEx’s legacy and its key to our proceeded with development later on. In 1978, our organizer and CEO Fred Smith stated, “The data about the bundle is as imperative as the bundle itself.” This set up a culture where innovation works as the focal sensory system behind each and every business procedure at the organization. It’s behind each one of the 13 million shipments that we procedure every day. It underpins our more than 400,000 colleagues working in 220 nations and domains as they interface 99 percent of the worldwide GDP through our transportation, internet business, and business administrations.
This legacy of custom-fabricated, imaginative, end-to-end frameworks of record and engagement—including our innovation of present day bundle following—empowered the business to grow internationally while keeping up our attention on process quality control. In any case, as FedEx entered the cutting edge registering time with a wake of heritage advances, we needed to re-assess the key IT that we have to push ahead in a web empowered world. In 2009, we started a modernization travel that we called Project Renewal. It’s our progressing vision for distributed computing where we are institutionalizing on the present web conventions—the versatile X86 datacenter stage and the “take advantage of” universe of programming as an administration.
Whether related to the logistics business or not, there’s a massive amount of disruptive activity in today’s e-commerce world, with venture capital pouring into both first-mile and last-mile solutions. So, we need to refactor our systems to stay competitive. On the infrastructure side, we have a hybrid compute environment where we burst containerized transaction traffic between our on-premises implementations and the public cloud. With Microsoft, we found a vendor that’s compatible with our approach to multi-cloud and platform services and the protection of our data through intelligent security services. For our same-day service for retailers, we built an API-first, cloud-native application using Microsoft Azure. This competitive, last-mile solution extended our business—with fewer IT resources required.
And when we talk about our renewal journey and software, we’re moving from a legacy of deep vertical applications toward a world where we can tap into and integrate software services to meet our needs and stay connected with customers. This is the essence of “everything as a service,” which dismantles the complexity of constant upgrade cycles, versioning, and patching. Now, instead of installing software across the many thousands of places where we operate, we are taking a different approach. We chose Microsoft 365 so our more than 400,000 team members can take advantage of the cloud in ways that make us more collaborative and creative, driving a new era of innovation.
The diversity of cloud-based business solutions that we can deploy to meet our associates’ needs, no matter where they work, is a huge advantage for FedEx. Now, frontline workers such as our mechanics can take their tablets and access the engineering diagrams they need while they’re seven stories up on a scaffolding, servicing the tail engine on one of our aircraft. We see it as key to our future to provide this modern “tap-into” world, where everything is accessible and where we operate as collaborative virtual teams in highly secure digital environments.
And at FedEx, we’ve always promoted a culture of empowerment because we believe it’s the wellspring of innovation. We got where we are through our heritage of technology innovation, but we cannot afford to rest on that reputation. Since 2009, we’ve been working diligently to stay relevant, re-engineering our legacy software for the cloud so we can engage with next-generation fulfillment systems.
