How Microsoft utilized AI to enable break to down on technical support tricks around the world

The scammers weren’t easy to track down.

“These people are very clever,” said Chris White, a principal researcher at Microsoft’s Redmond, Washington, research lab who collaborated with the company’s Digital Crimes Unit to help track down the scammers.

And they were becoming a real headache for users.

Microsoft’s Digital Crimes Unit, which tracks and prevents cybercrime, receives at least 10,000 complaints a month from around the world about pop-up ads and telemarketers claiming to be legitimate tech support representatives. In general, the scam is more likely to start with a pop-up ad than a phone call, but there are regional exceptions. In Germany, for example, 85 percent of complaints were about tech scams that originated with a phone call.

The majority of the complaints appear to be coming from people 50 and older, but younger users aren’t immune. About 30 percent of the people who filed a complaint and gave their age said they were under age 49, according to the latest data from the Digital Crimes Unit.

Because not everyone reports an attempted attack, experts believe the total number of complaints represents only a small fraction of the people targeted by the scams.

Using AI running in the cloud to find scams
The reports from customers were helpful, but the team was still having trouble catching what White calls the “biggest fish” – the masterminds behind some of these large-scale operations.

That’s because the victims may only have limited information to help in the investigation, such as a phone number that’s been disconnected. Also, few victims capture screen shots of the original scam pop-up.

Finally, the scammers themselves are very good at compartmentalizing their business, separating the telemarketing operation from people building the pop-ups.

“We had a bunch of customers who were reporting scams but didn’t know who scammed them,” said Courtney Gregoire, assistant general counsel for the Digital Crimes Unit.

To catch the scammers, Microsoft sleuths first had to figure out where the attacks were coming from – no easy task, since they often only used an IP address, or virtual home, for a day or less before moving on to another location to avoid being caught.

To find them, the team created a model that looked for content that behaved in a way that was consistent with the scam, such as creating a pop-up that refreshed in microseconds to give the appearance it wasn’t going away. Then, the team scoured the web for those sites and captured screen shots of all the content that could potentially be a scam.

It would be impractical, if not impossible, to manually scan through the hundreds of thousands of questionable pieces of content they found, so the team turned to a branch of AI called machine learning to sort the data.

With machine learning, a system can learn to recognize something – such as similar words or images – as it’s given more data that shows what it’s looking for. With this project, the team used custom AI tools, running on Microsoft’s Azure cloud computing platform, to look for image similarity, content and other visual clues that would determine the chances that the pop-up was relevant to the fraud investigation.

Then, they used the computer vision API from Microsoft Cognitive Services to scan the ads for phone numbers and other bits of information that could provide clues as to their origin.

Without AI tools and cloud computing, White said they would likely have had to approach the problem slowly and manually, using thousands of employees to document complaints and try to manually figure out whether the data they’d gathered pointed to a pattern.

With the technology, they were able to more quickly track the fast-moving scammers and devote investigator time to higher value work, like finding the connections that could lead to those big fish.

“What we’re able to do is address the problem at the scale it’s happening, and provide the mechanisms for us to do something about it,” White said.

Making data understandable
The AI tools made their job faster, less costly and more precise, but then White and his team had another challenge: How to present their findings in such a way that lawyers and non-tech experts could understand it and decide what action to take.

White has had past involvement with this test. Prior in his profession, he’d been sent to Afghanistan to utilize information investigation to help with the U.S. protection methodology there. On the ground, he understood that his information wouldn’t help much unless he could figure out how to exhibit it that seemed well and good to commanders rather than PC researchers. He took in the estimation of visual devices, for example, diagrams and charts.

With the technical support trick, the group expected to make their discoveries justifiable to legal counselors and law implementation authorities. To do that, they utilized an information perception apparatus called Power BI to make intelligent, straightforward outlines and information representations. For example, the team has used similar AI tools, combined with Power BI, to help people without technical expertise create systems that can scan online news and social media to understand patterns that may affect their company or organization.

White will be discussing the work his team is doing to help people make sense of big sets of data at the Data Summit in Dublin, Ireland this week.

Weaving retailer data with client needs

The amount of data involved in styling can be overwhelming. “I share a giant, complex spreadsheet with a contract stylist. We use it to track brands, online retailers and boutiques,” Mellicia says. “My Microsoft Excel sheet is a vital resource.”

The spreadsheet contains information Mellicia can use for clients, and in her blog and social media posts. It includes trend, sizing and style data categorized by brand and retailer. “Excel lets us easily sort this information depending on the task at hand,” she says. For example, she uses the split planes feature of Excel to focus on a single client and see which retailers may carry a needed item. She also easily searches the data to find a specific size or trend item. “It would be impossible for me to track this information without Excel.”

Mellicia and the contract stylist share the spreadsheet online, so the information can be updated easily by either of them. “It’s exciting to open up the spreadsheet and rediscover retailers or brands I may have forgotten about,” she explains. “More resources for me means more resources for clients—and all in all, it lets me do my job better.”

Mellicia’s also considered some of the newer features in Excel, like Maps. “This could become useful for our marketing,” she says. With Excel Power Maps, I could plot client locations and use this information to create Facebook ads targeted to those areas or host an event where a concentration of clients is located.”

Despite her busy schedule, Mellicia finds time to give back as an entrepreneur. She volunteers with YouthCare, a nonprofit that provides services, education and training to homeless youth. Mellicia hosts styling sessions for youths, ages 16–24. “I help them translate the authenticity of their personal style to clothes that are appropriate for job interviews and work,” she explains.

Keep your family up-to-date with the Microsoft Family calendar

Microsoft Family provides a window into your kids’ digital lives with online activity reports, so you can keep them safe, set screen time habits and set digital allowances, allowing them to make purchases without needing your credit card. It also includes the Family calendar—which you can access from Outlook.com—allowing every member of your family to see and schedule family events—making it easy to stay on top of all your family activities.

If you already have a Microsoft Family, there is no additional set-up; your family calendar automatically shows up in the left pane in your Outlook Calendar for every member of your family and syncs across all your devices. If you haven’t created a Microsoft Family yet, you can create one from the Microsoft Family page.

Improved calendar sharing

You can now easily share all the events in your calendar with anyone who has an Outlook.com or Office 365 account. You have control over the permissions, so you can allow specific friends to edit or only view the events on your calendar.

This means you can see your personal and work calendar side by side, or you can share your calendar with a friend, so they can add and modify events—perfect when you need to coordinate travel plans.

To share your calendar, simply go to your Outlook Calendar, click Share at the top and then select the calendar you want to share. Next, enter the Outlook.com or Office 365 account of the person with whom you want to share, select the permissions and send the invite.

The person with whom you are sharing will get an email with an Accept button. Once they accept from the web version of Outlook, your calendar will show up in their Other calendars list. They can view your calendar, overlay it with theirs and toggle it on/off from the left pane. In addition, it will show up in their mobile device.

Outlook.com automatically adds dinner reservations and other events to your calendar

Last year, we announced easier ways for you to stay on top of your travel and package deliveries and to easily follow your favorite sports teams.

Now, Outlook.com recognizes email confirmations for dinner reservations, concerts or other events and automatically adds them to your calendar, so you won’t forget. The confirmation email displays the details at the top, so you don’t have scroll down to find it. On your calendar, you can click the event to show the details.

We’ve also made it easier for you to share your flights or other events with others. Simply open the event on your calendar and select Share via email. Add recipients, a personal note and hit send—everyone will get an easy-to-read email with your event details.

Interesting calendars adds more sports and teams

If you live in an English-speaking country, you can already stay on top of the events that matter to you, from sporting events to TV shows, with Interesting calendars.

We are now rolling out Interesting calendars to other regions. If you live in China, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, Spain or Brazil, you will see the Interesting calendar feature with the most popular sporting events and teams in your country. You can browse for your favorite teams and sports—from fútbol to motocross—and add them to your calendar, so you don’t miss a game. With this rollout, we’ve added more sporting events and teams, curated based on your language in your region and time zone settings.
