Microsoft 365 helps businesses increase trust and innovation through compliance with Compliance Manager Preview

The evolution of technology and cloud innovation are democratizing data and in turn fueling digital transformation. Embracing every facet of this digital transformation offers organizations an opportunity to better engage with customers, empower employees, and optimize the creation and delivery of products and services. However, with the increased use of personal data to customize user experiences, new compliance laws—such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)—are a logical policy component of our technology landscape. Microsoft 365 offers a complete cloud solution to help you with GDPR compliance, while Compliance Manager helps you assess and manage your compliance risk.

Compliance promotes innovation by building customer trust in technology

At its core, the GDPR strengthens personal privacy rights for individuals in the EU and requires organizations to provide individuals control over their personal data. To build and maintain the trust needed to manage customer relationships through technology, organizations need tighter controls over what personal data they hold and how they manage and protect this data. Systems and processes need to be modernized to prevent the unlawful use of data, accommodate personal data requests by individuals, and provide notifications of breaches in a timely manner.

Businesses are looking to the cloud for added value

Our research suggests that companies not only see the long-term value of building trust by protecting customer data, but in fact believe their investments in compliance will positively impact other areas of their business—like productivity and collaboration.* When IT decision makers in Europe and the U.S. were asked to identify their top concern in achieving GDPR compliance, “protecting customer data” was the #1 response while avoiding fines ranked #8. More than half of respondents said the GDPR brings added benefits like collaboration, productivity, and security. Cloud solutions like Microsoft 365 are a big reason that businesses see opportunity in compliance. Of those surveyed, 41 percent said they are likely to move more of their company’s infrastructure to the cloud to become compliant. And among leading cloud vendors, Microsoft was identified as most trusted by a wide margin (28 percent), followed by IBM (16 percent), Google (11 percent), and Amazon (10 percent). All told, 92 percent of IT decision makers in companies that store data primarily in the cloud identified as being confident in their GDPR readiness, compared with just 65 percent of those who prefer to store data on-premises.

Entrepreneur helps clients transform with Office

Mellicia Marx is in the business of transformation. She runs Poplin Style Direction, a personal styling business that ensures a client’s look is on point. She’s helped new mothers revive their wardrobes, and other clients dress for new office environments confidently. “I love watching people transform,” she says.

Mellicia helps people understand which garments best complement their shape, personality and lifestyle. She teaches them how to shop, what to wear and how to wear it. Mellicia finds the secret style sauce that elevates each client.

Polishing a business’s image

Mellicia also knows that the success of her business depends on styling, too. The look and feel of her business and good communication with clients are key to growth. Through her website, she introduces clients to the styling process and options, and provides a private client access area where she shares personalized advice with each client. The website also includes her blog, the “voice” of her business, where she offers styling advice that has proven to be a powerful tool for attracting clients.

Mellicia finds Microsoft Word to be invaluable to maintaining her online presence because it makes it easy to share information with her web designer for needed updates. “Word is user-friendly,” she says. “You can figure out everything you need to do in five minutes or less.” She also spends a lot of time traveling between clients, and Microsoft Officemobile apps help her keep business moving when she’s not at her desk. “I have Office on my iPad Mini, so I can view and make edits to a document and respond to my designer or other contractors quickly.”

Structuring work-life balance

While rewarding in its freedom and creativity, being an entrepreneur can also make it more challenging to find work-life balance. Mellicia’s business is built on relationships, and nurturing them takes time. Efficiency in her personal life is crucial. “Word helps me organize our home life,” she explains. For example, she uses Word tables to organize her son’s activities, and to coordinate with the families of his friends who do the same activities or camps. “It keeps us all on the same page.”

Weaving retailer data with client needs

The amount of data involved in styling can be overwhelming. “I share a giant, complex spreadsheet with a contract stylist. We use it to track brands, online retailers and boutiques,” Mellicia says. “My Microsoft Excel sheet is a vital resource.”

The spreadsheet contains information Mellicia can use for clients, and in her blog and social media posts. It includes trend, sizing and style data categorized by brand and retailer. “Excel lets us easily sort this information depending on the task at hand,” she says. For example, she uses the split planes feature of Excel to focus on a single client and see which retailers may carry a needed item. She also easily searches the data to find a specific size or trend item. “It would be impossible for me to track this information without Excel.”

Mellicia and the contract stylist share the spreadsheet online, so the information can be updated easily by either of them. “It’s exciting to open up the spreadsheet and rediscover retailers or brands I may have forgotten about,” she explains. “More resources for me means more resources for clients—and all in all, it lets me do my job better.”

Mellicia’s also considered some of the newer features in Excel, like Maps. “This could become useful for our marketing,” she says. With Excel Power Maps, I could plot client locations and use this information to create Facebook ads targeted to those areas or host an event where a concentration of clients is located.”

Giving back with panache

Despite her busy schedule, Mellicia finds time to give back as an entrepreneur. She volunteers with YouthCare, a nonprofit that provides services, education and training to homeless youth. Mellicia hosts styling sessions for youths, ages 16–24. “I help them translate the authenticity of their personal style to clothes that are appropriate for job interviews and work,” she explains.

Mellicia uses Microsoft PowerPoint to give presentations at YouthCare. “It’s great for these kids to be exposed to business tools like PowerPoint,” she says. “Also, my whole team of volunteers uses it—so if I can’t make it to a presentation, any one of them can take over and run the show.”

Just as a bold wardrobe is built on basics, Mellicia relies on Office as a foundation for her business. Whether it’s communicating with colleagues; organizing, sorting and analyzing retailer data; or presenting fashion concepts in her volunteer work, Office is her go-to technology. “I can’t control what software my contractors or clients use, or their level of comfort with different technologies—so it’s especially important I use tools that are easy for anyone,” she says. “Office offers that and more. It lets me spend my time on work that matters—providing great style options for my clients.”

An ad-free experience

Without ads, you’ll have less distractions and faster page load times, so you can be more focused and have a better email experience.

Sophisticated protection against email threats

Email is one of the most popular ways that criminals trick people into giving away their passwords or downloading viruses and ransomware. That’s why all Outlook.com accounts already feature robust spam and virus filtering and support from a global security team that works tirelessly to stop these threats.

For Office 365 Home and Office 365 Personal subscribers, we now offer additional security against the most sophisticated types of threats in two ways:

Get the most out of your day with new calendar features in Outlook.com

New calendar features in Outlook.com help you stay on top of your family activities; automatically add dinner reservations, concerts and events to your calendar; follow your favorite sports teams; and share your calendar with others. Here’s a look at the features we’re releasing today, which make your Outlook.com calendar more intelligent and helpful:

  • Microsoft Family calendar—Keep your family up-to-date with a single place for all of your events that everyone in the family can access.
  • Improved calendar sharing—Easily share your Outlook calendar with anyone who has an Outlook.com or Office 365 account.
  • Expanded support for events in your email—Outlook now automatically adds dinner reservations and other events to your calendar.
  • Expanded support for Interesting calendars—Interesting calendars now supports more languages, teams and sports.
  • Cortana can schedule your remote meetings—Stop emailing back and forth to set up a meeting. Sign up for the Calendar.help Preview and ask Cortana to schedule a phone or conference call for you.

Keep your family up-to-date with the Microsoft Family calendar

Microsoft Family provides a window into your kids’ digital lives with online activity reports, so you can keep them safe, set screen time habits and set digital allowances, allowing them to make purchases without needing your credit card. It also includes the Family calendar—which you can access from Outlook.com—allowing every member of your family to see and schedule family events—making it easy to stay on top of all your family activities.

If you already have a Microsoft Family, there is no additional set-up; your family calendar automatically shows up in the left pane in your Outlook Calendar for every member of your family and syncs across all your devices. If you haven’t created a Microsoft Family yet, you can create one from the Microsoft Family page.

The Family calendar is located under Other calendars.

Improved calendar sharing

You can now easily share all the events in your calendar with anyone who has an Outlook.com or Office 365 account. You have control over the permissions, so you can allow specific friends to edit or only view the events on your calendar.

This means you can see your personal and work calendar side by side, or you can share your calendar with a friend, so they can add and modify events—perfect when you need to coordinate travel plans.

To share your calendar, simply go to your Outlook Calendar, click Share at the top and then select the calendar you want to share. Next, enter the Outlook.com or Office 365 account of the person with whom you want to share, select the permissions and send the invite.

The person with whom you are sharing will get an email with an Accept button. Once they accept from the web version of Outlook, your calendar will show up in their Other calendars list. They can view your calendar, overlay it with theirs and toggle it on/off from the left pane. In addition, it will show up in their mobile device.

Outlook.com automatically adds dinner reservations and other events to your calendar

Last year, we announced easier ways for you to stay on top of your travel and package deliveries and to easily follow your favorite sports teams.

Now, Outlook.com recognizes email confirmations for dinner reservations, concerts or other events and automatically adds them to your calendar, so you won’t forget. The confirmation email displays the details at the top, so you don’t have scroll down to find it. On your calendar, you can click the event to show the details.

Outlook detects dinner confirmations and automatically adds them to your calendar.

We’ve also made it easier for you to share your flights or other events with others. Simply open the event on your calendar and select Share via email. Add recipients, a personal note and hit send—everyone will get an easy-to-read email with your event details.

Interesting calendars adds more sports and teams

If you live in an English-speaking country, you can already stay on top of the events that matter to you, from sporting events to TV shows, with Interesting calendars.

We are now rolling out Interesting calendars to other regions. If you live in China, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, Spain or Brazil, you will see the Interesting calendar feature with the most popular sporting events and teams in your country. You can browse for your favorite teams and sports—from fútbol to motocross—and add them to your calendar, so you don’t miss a game. With this rollout, we’ve added more sporting events and teams, curated based on your language in your region and time zone settings.

With Interesting calendars, you can add your favorite teams and sporting events to your calendar.

Cortana can schedule your remote meetings

Last year, we announced the private preview of Calendar.help—a service that allows Cortana to handle meeting scheduling for you through email and automatically add an event to your calendar with the details of the appointment.

We’ve made improvements to the service and need Outlook.com users to try it! You can join the Calendar.help Preview and let Cortana help you schedule your meetings.

Just ask Cortana to schedule a remote meeting, and with just one email, she’ll take it from there.

In 1978, our organizer and CEO Fred Smith stated, “The data about the bundle is as imperative as the bundle itself.” This set up a culture where innovation works as the focal sensory system behind each and every business procedure at the organization. It’s behind each one of the 13 million shipments that we procedure every day. It underpins our more than 400,000 colleagues working in 220 nations and domains as they interface 99 percent of the worldwide GDP through our transportation, internet business, and business administrations.

This legacy of custom-fabricated, imaginative, end-to-end frameworks of record and engagement—including our innovation of present day bundle following—empowered the business to grow internationally while keeping up our attention on process quality control. In any case, as FedEx entered the cutting edge registering time with a wake of heritage advances, we needed to re-assess the key IT that we have to push ahead in a web empowered world. In 2009, we started a modernization travel that we called Project Renewal. It’s our progressing vision for distributed computing where we are institutionalizing on the present web conventions—the versatile X86 datacenter stage and the “take advantage of” universe of programming as an administration.

Whether related to the logistics business or not, there’s a massive amount of disruptive activity in today’s e-commerce world, with venture capital pouring into both first-mile and last-mile solutions. So, we need to refactor our systems to stay competitive. On the infrastructure side, we have a hybrid compute environment where we burst containerized transaction traffic between our on-premises implementations and the public cloud. With Microsoft, we found a vendor that’s compatible with our approach to multi-cloud and platform services and the protection of our data through intelligent security services. For our same-day service for retailers, we built an API-first, cloud-native application using Microsoft Azure. This competitive, last-mile solution extended our business—with fewer IT resources required.

And when we talk about our renewal journey and software, we’re moving from a legacy of deep vertical applications toward a world where we can tap into and integrate software services to meet our needs and stay connected with customers. This is the essence of “everything as a service,” which dismantles the complexity of constant upgrade cycles, versioning, and patching. Now, instead of installing software across the many thousands of places where we operate, we are taking a different approach. We chose Microsoft 365 so our more than 400,000 team members can take advantage of the cloud in ways that make us more collaborative and creative, driving a new era of innovation.

The diversity of cloud-based business solutions that we can deploy to meet our associates’ needs, no matter where they work, is a huge advantage for FedEx. Now, frontline workers such as our mechanics can take their tablets and access the engineering diagrams they need while they’re seven stories up on a scaffolding, servicing the tail engine on one of our aircraft. We see it as key to our future to provide this modern “tap-into” world, where everything is accessible and where we operate as collaborative virtual teams in highly secure digital environments.

And at FedEx, we’ve always promoted a culture of empowerment because we believe it’s the wellspring of innovation. We got where we are through our heritage of technology innovation, but we cannot afford to rest on that reputation. Since 2009, we’ve been working diligently to stay relevant, re-engineering our legacy software for the cloud so we can engage with next-generation fulfillment systems. Whether you are shipping apparel, or flowers, or car parts from the other side of the world, FedEx will continue to innovate in a cloud-based computing paradigm, so we can make good on our promise to move everything to everywhere—just as we’ve always done.
