Here are the new features in Office 365’s February Insider Slow update

www.office.com/setup Blog: Yesterday, Microsoft announced the February Insider Slow update for Office 365. As usual, this update is packed with new features, and if you’re a Office Insider, you can take advantage and download it now by heading to File > Account > Update Options > Update Now.

www.office.com/setup Blog: Overall, this update pushes the newest version to Version 1702 (Build 7870.2013.) For the details on what has changed, you can check Microsoft’s official changelog below.

  • A quick start to your research: PowerPoint QuickStarter gives you research ideas and design suggestions for a presentation on a subject of your choosing. Just choose the QuickStarter template from File > New, and specify the subject you want to study.
  • Set things straight: On devices that have touch screens, you can use the Ruler on the Draw tab of the ribbon to draw straight lines or to align a set of objects. The Ruler pivots to any position you want: horizontal, vertical, or anything in between: it has a degrees setting so that you can set it at a precise angle, if necessary. (We’re rolling out this feature gradually, so if you don’t see the Ruler button on the Draw tab right away, don’t worry. It’s coming soon.)
  • Enhanced digital writing assistant: With additional intelligent services built-in, Editor is better able to recognize your words in context and offer the right spelling suggestions. Look for these improvements in Word and Outlook.
  • Easier background removal: In Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, we’ve made it easier to remove and edit the background of a picture. You no longer have to draw a rectangle around the foreground of your picture; instead, the app will automatically detect the general background areas. In addition, the pencil for marking areas to keep or remove can now draw free-form lines, rather than being limited to straight lines.
  • Move pages from side to side: In Word, navigate pages in Print Layout view by sliding them side-to-side like a stack of paper. To try it, click View > Side to Side.
  • From Visio to PowerPoint in a few clicks: Take snippets of a Visio drawing and export them as slides to PowerPoint. To get started, open a diagram and click View > Slide Snippets Pane. In the pane, click Add to snip portions of your diagram and Export to send your slide snippets to a new PowerPoint slide deck.

Microsoft Uses AI to Tighten Word’s Translation Tool in Office Update

The latest batch of Microsoft Office updates includes a built-in translator in Word and search capabilities that help users connect with co-workers and their shared content.

Thanks to Microsoft’s accelerated software release cadence, Word now features an improved built-in translation tool that can help users make sense out of documents from their overseas colleagues.

Microsoft is taking a cloudlike approach to software updates, meaning that Office 365 users can expect to see new features and enhancements crop up on a more regular basis. The latest update offers some new tricks for users who routinely use Word’s translation tool to decipher documents authored in other languages.

“We’ve revamped the translation tools available within Word. You can now translate sections of text, or your entire document, and review or save the result as a regular document file,” said Kirk Koenigsbauer, corporate vice president at Microsoft Office, in a blog post. “Translator supports 60 languages, including 11 that use neural machine translation, providing superior quality and fluency to help you work more confidently.”

Like Google, Microsoft uses neural network systems to improve the quality of translated text, yet another example of Microsoft employing artificial intelligence (AI) technologies across its software ecosystem. The new language features in Word can be found under the Review menu item.

In addition to more flexible translation tools, Microsoft has expanded the reach of Tell Me, the search and support tool in Word, PowerPoint and Excel. Users covered by commercial Office 365 plans can search for people and files across the entire organization, or share their own documents using Tell Me.

Now that Office 365 supports 3D objects, which can be used to spice up Word files or create eye-catching PowerPoint presentations, Microsoft is making it easier to share and organize 3D content using the OneDrive cloud file storage and sharing service. Users can now open and view 3D objects in the OneDrive app. The browser-based OneDrive.com service, meanwhile, supports direct viewing without an added plugin.

Outlook.com users now have a new way to keep tabs on their colleagues. The web-based email application allows consumer users to view LinkedIn profile information without leaving their inboxes.

The MyAnalytics (formerly the Delve Analytics add-on for Office 365) dashboard gains three new charts that can help users maximize their time and strike a better work-life balance. Building on the weekly snapshot visualization that shows users how much time they spend emailing co-workers, in meetings and doing other work activities, a new Trends chart displays changes in those activities over greater stretches of time, allowing users to see how well they are progressing on their work goals.

Another chart, called Your Time Investments, displays a user’s contacts in various “orbits.” Those contacts whose orbits appear closest indicate a tighter work relationship. Finally, the Your Groups chart shows the top six Office 365 Groups in terms of engagement. This video on the new MyAnalytics features provides a closer look.

Office 365 November Updates Bring New Enterprise Apps, Resume Assistant

Office 365 November updates bring a host of new features for businesses, with secure link sharing, new apps, and StaffHub improvements. Microsoft will continue to work on such features in December.

November has come to a close. That means a start to the holiday festivities, but, more importantly, a roundup of Office 365 improvements. Microsoft has implemented a ton of new features, from security enhancements to analytic tools and more.

Unsurprisingly, one of the month’s big focuses was enterprise. Microsoft announced worldwide availability of Microsoft 365 Business, with several new apps to match. Microsoft Connections, Microsoft Listings, and Microsoft Invoicing all users manage their business.

 Alongside it was several improvements to privacy, security, and compliance. Microsoft’s Advanced eDiscovery lets organizations analyze Office 365 data to find information about specific people or topics. Thanks to an update in November, users can now import content from outside of Office 365, greatly extending its use cases.

Last month also marked the implementation of secure link sharing from OneDrive and SharePoint. This is something Microsoft touted at Ignite in September, and it’s not generally available. Email verification codes appear each time a user tries to access a file, meaning they’re continually protected.

StaffHub and Resume Assistant

Microsoft has also made changes to its apps. StaffHub now lets workers clock in and out of their shifts and provides company news and resources. The hope to inform the workforce and increase efficiency as a result.

Mile IQ got one of the most significant improvements, thanks to AI. The app will now automatically classify trips depending on frequent locations. It will also detect if the user is travelling during work hours, and automatically classify those as personal. The result is less micromanagement and more accurate payments.

In addition, Resume Assistant is now officially available in Word. It uses LinkedIn integration to help create one with personalized insights and delivers relevant examples and descriptions. Together, the updates mark a significant step forward for Office 365 in business, and no doubt it will continue to improve in December.

Get November Windows and Office updates installed — carefully

putting on a band-aid patch with binary code

The list of complaints about this month’s patches goes on forever. I covered the high points a couple of days ago. We’ve seen people who are running Win10 Creators Update and who specifically said they didn’t want to upgrade to Fall Creators Update get pushed into an upgrade anyway. Those using Epson dot matrix or POS printers lost them for a couple of weeks. Add to that a heaping handful of hooey and there were enough problems to keep most Windows customers shaking their heads. Or quaking in their boots.

I’ve been waiting to see what Microsoft would do with Win10 version 1709. There was an entry in the Win10 Update History listing for a cumulative update called KB 4051963, which would bring 1709 up to build 16299.96, but that entry mysteriously disappeared yesterday.

While waiting, Microsoft released an updated version of the Equation Editor patch. Per @abbodi86, the old versions (KB 4011276 and KB 2553204) only worked with English and Chinese versions of Office. The new patches, KB 4011604 (for Office 2007) and KB 4011618 (for Office 2010), now work with all languages.

We’re starting to see some consumer-grade malware that exploits the Equation Editor security hole, CVE-2017-11882, and that’s the primary reason for getting patches applied now.

.Net Patches

The latest versions of the .Net patches (released two days ago) appear to be working.

Office Patches

Microsoft has a catch-all web page for known (which is to say, acknowledged) bugs in Office patches. In it you’ll find entries for known Outlook problems (“Outlook was unable to recover some or all of the items in this folder” and “View Settings button is missing”), Excel problems (“Errors loading Excel Solver add-in,” “Excel may crash when you try to embed an object into a worksheet”), Word (“Export failed due to an unexpected error”), and OneNote (“This notebook may not sync correctly because another program is syncing these files”).

Surprisingly, there’s no mention on the bug page of a conflict with Dynamics 365 and Outlook, officially called “Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Outlook is unable to render webpages after installing the October 2017 Microsoft Outlook security update.” Avoid this month’s security patch for Outlook 2017 if you’re one of the unfortunate ones who need to use Dynamics 365 for Outlook 2017.

Windows 7 and 8.1 Patches

Microsoft has fixed the bug that clobbered Epson dot matrix printers in Win7 and 8.1. If you install patches this month using Windows Update, the installer will find the right fix, if you need it, and apply it for you. If you manually download and install the Security-Only patch (which I no longer recommend!), and you have an Epson dot matrix printer, you also need to install the fix, called KB 4055038, manually.

Microsoft is still blocking updates to Windows 7 and 8.1 on recent computers. If you are running Windows 7 or 8.1 on a PC that’s no more than a year old, follow the instructions in AKB 2000006 or @MrBrian’s summary of @radosuaf’s method to make sure you can use Windows Update to get updates applied.

If you’re very concerned about Microsoft snooping on you and want to install just security patches, realize that the privacy path’s getting more difficult. The old “Group B” — security patches only — isn’t dead, but it’s no longer within the grasp of typical Windows customers. We’re actively discussing whether it’s worthwhile continuing to post information about the security-only patching path. Microsoft has made that option considerably more obtuse than it was a year ago. If you insist on manually installing security patches only, follow the instructions in @PKCano’s AKB 2000003.

For most Windows 7 and 8.1 users, I recommend following AKB 2000004: How to apply the Win7 and 8.1 Monthly Rollups. If you want to minimize Microsoft’s snooping but still install all of the offered patches, turn off the Customer Experience Improvement Program (Step 1 of AKB 2000007: Turning off the worst Windows 7 and 8.1 snooping) before you install any patches. (Thx, @MrBrian).

Watch out for driver updates — you’re far better off getting them from a manufacturer’s website. After you’ve installed the latest Monthly Rollup, if you’re intent on minimizing Microsoft’s snooping, run through the steps in AKB 2000007: Turning off the worst Win7 and 8.1 snooping. Realize that we don’t know what information Microsoft collects on Window 7 and 8.1 machines.

Windows 10 Patches

If you’re stuck on Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, version 1709, and you want to stay ahead of the malware mavens, you don’t have much choice but to use Windows Update to install KB 4048955 and bring your system up to build 16299.64. Before you do, read the KB article and understand that (1) you won’t be able to print on Epson dot matrix printers, and (2) “Internet Explorer 11 users who use SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) may not be able to scroll through a drop-down menu using the scroll bar.” Of course, if you’re still using IE 11, you have plenty of other things to worry about.

I’m still seeing lots and lots of reports of weird bugs in 1709. There’s an ongoing list on the AskWoody site here. I’ve also seen independent reports of problems with 1709 breaking search in Outlook 2007, as well as reports of folder permissions problems and autostart after boot inanities.

We’re still in the unpaid beta testing phase of Win10 version 1709. You’d be well advised to stick with your current version of Win10 and wait for the cannon fodder to fulfill their destiny.

If you’re running Win10 Creators Update, version 1703, and you want to stay on 1703 while those on 1709 get to eat Microsoft’s dog food, follow the instructions here to ward off the upgrade. As you go through the steps, keep in mind that Microsoft forgot to honor the “Current Branch for Business” setting — golly! — so you need to run the “feature update” (read: version change) deferral setting all the way up to 365. And hope that Microsoft doesn’t forget how to count to 365.

The latest cumulative update for 1703, KB 4055254, build 15063.729, released Nov. 22, has one acknowledged bug, which is the IE 11 SSRS bug mentioned for 1709.

If you’re still on Win10 Anniversary Update, version 1607, you need to be aware of yet another bug — the “CDPUserSvc_XXXX has stopped working” bug which Microsoft finally acknowledged last week. It’s been around for nearly two months. See my discussion here for details.

The latest 1607 cumulative update, KB 4051033, build 14393.1914, is just three days old. Aren’t you glad you waited?

If you’re running an earlier version of Win10, you’re basically on your own.

To get Windows 10 patched, go through the steps in “8 steps to install Windows 10 patches like a pro.”

As is always the case, DON’T CHECK ANYTHING THAT’S UNCHECKED. In particular, don’t be tempted to install anything marked “Preview.” Thar be tygers.

Time to get patched. Tell your friends, but make sure they understand what’s happening. And for heaven’s sake, as soon as you’re patched, turn off automatic updating! Full instructions are in the referenced guides to patching.

Measure and grow engagement with group insights in Yammer

Yammer helps you engage employees across organizational groups, form communities and run cross-company initiatives. Community managers play a large role in creating and nurturing groups for these purposes. We want to empower community managers to make better decisions around their efforts on Yammer by helping them better understand the activity happening in their groups.

Over the past year, we have made significant progress on helping Office 365 admins gain insights on how people are using Yammer in their organizations through the Office 365 Usage Reporting Dashboard, Office 365 Adoption content pack and Microsoft Graph reporting APIs. These reporting capabilities provide and extensive view into Yammer usage and adoption at the user, device and group levels.

This week, we are excited to release new group insights in Yammer, providing engagement metrics right within Yammer so that community managers and members can get a better understanding of their groups’ engagement and activity. This, in turn, will help better inform efforts to improve, grow or execute campaigns in groups.

Accessible across your network

We have heard extensive feedback that managing a cross-organizational community oftentimes includes the efforts of stakeholders and champions with limited or no access to the information available in the Office 365 admin center. For that reason, insights for public groups can be accessed by anyone in your network by navigating to group actions from the group’s feed. Insights for private groups, however, are restricted to members of the group.

People activity in your community

Yammer groups are open by default, allowing the knowledge and information created in them to benefit people regardless of their membership status in the group. Passive visitors may gain value from group conversations and apply the information elsewhere in their daily work. In fact, during early research we discovered that in addition to understanding group member activity, community managers find it beneficial to understand the activity of visitors who are not members of the group. This is why group insights break down activity for both group members and non-members.

 

With group insights, you get an overview of activity for the last 7 days, 28 days and 12 months. This will help you:

  • Know how many members and non-members are active in the group
  • Observe predominant activity – posting, reading or liking messages – of group members and non-members
  • Get a glimpse of how key metrics – for example, number of active people or the number of posted messages – have changed since the previous period

Group activity over time

Group insights show you how posting, reading and liking activities are trending over time. These visualized trends illustrate the contributions of group members and non-members to activity in the group. Now, you can track engagement with content from campaigns or initiatives hosted in Yammer. Identify spikes in activity over the course of the year, month or week so that you can report back to leaders and optimize efforts.

These examples are very interesting and demonstrate the power of communications and Microsoft platform brought together . The main benefits for me are the direct impact of productivity and efficiency either on customer or employee part.

Ignite Live Blogging: Microsoft Teams Behind the Scenes

Teams is the big new collaboration buzz here at Ignite, and at today’s session we get to see behind the curtains and get a little insight about the announcements made at the conference. This is an open Q&A session where the panel will talk about the news at the conference, the reactions to the announcements, and take questions from the audience.

Dan gave an introductory presentation with a few important  Key points

  • Microsoft is committed to Skype for Business. I have personally been asked if Teams is replacing SfB, but that is not the message here. There is at least one more server version in the making, and there is no announcement about any termination of SFBO
  • Teams is ready now, but will get readier over time. It is an application in constant development.

Introduction to the Teams team

Dan moved on to go through a couple of slides to set the agenda for the Q&A, and letting the audience hear some of the Teams team (this being the software engineering organization that builds Teams) experiences and reflections. I reccomend looking at the slides for accuracy, but here are some of the highlights I want to share:

  • The team uses Teams for all internal meetings
  • Teams is used for most 1-1 communication within the engineering team
  • Many use chat, but the general trend is to use channels more than basic chat
  • A few core teams
  • 100 channels (by function, products, announcements, competitive, fun staff and more)
  • Apps and extensions are widely used

After working with Teams for a while, here are some of the Teams team wishes for the future. The wish list is not a roadmap, but rather examples of areas they could look into in the future.

  • Private channels within teams, creating a hierarchy
  • Shared channels between teams
  • Read-only channels for informational purposes
  • Sharing chat history
  • Participant controls in meeting (“Desperately” – Dan Stevenson )

Dan also shared some of the key findings when it comes to factors driving the usage, growth and retention

  • Get the users to use the Mobile app – Users tend to be more productive when using mobile: (mobile users tend to be more active overall when mobile).
  • Make sure users already belong to a team before adding them to Teams. This gives them something to start with.
  • Smaller teams usually tend not to work, 3 is to small, 6+ tend to work better
  • File sharing: People got to the places their files are
  • An IT-led adoption tends to get things going at a quicker pace, where an organic approach will take some time to catch up in volume of active users.

My own summary

“On the way”, “on the roadmap” and “coming soon” are often a part of the answers we hear, and it just shows this is a product in the making. And it will be evolved over time, just as many other products now are continuously being improved. Microsoft encourages us to use Teams and SfB side-by-side until required functionality is ready in Teams. But if the features a group of people require is already available in Teams (like internal chat, meetings and document collaboration) you should really consider to make the swap to Teams right away.

I think it will take some time until the consumers and IT-pros get used to the idea that the product is “never” being finished the way things were done in the “old” days. This is the power of the cloud, it’s a new way to deliver funtionallity into products continously. The time when finalized products are shipped every “X” years is simply over.

Don’t heistate to get started. Use tools side-by-side, and gradually phase out obsolete tools when the new tools cover your requirements. That’s the real message here at Ignite.

Today, we’re starting to roll out a new, personalized search experience in Office 365, along with improvements to Delve, all powered by the Microsoft Graph.

Let’s dive into the details.

Personalized search coming to a Delve search box near you

Office 365 is growing from a usage and storage perspective. And specific to search, the content indexing service is growing steadily at 10 percent month-over-month (MOM) – proof that users may be more challenged to find the right people and content.

Today Delve delivers search results that are informed by who you work with, and what you work on, starting at the moment you begin typing in the Search box. With its new updates, Delve will provide even more personalized search experience in two ways:

  • Get back to what you were doing—When you click in the Search text box and before you type anything, you will see result items appear based on your most recent work. As you type, you’ll see a refinement of results related to the keywords you enter.
  • Discover new information—Once you press Return, you enter the discovery phase where you are searching content, people (based on name and expertise), and sites from throughout your organization. Content is presented in the order of what is most relevant to you. For example, documents by people you work with will typically rank higher than documents by other people. Similarly, documents on SharePoint sites you work on would be ranked higher.

Microsoft Graph improvements for Office 365

The content, activity, people and recommendations that surface in Delve and other intelligent experiences are powered by Microsoft Graph, which has recently been enhanced to surface more personalized insights in Office 365. The MicrosoftGraph is designed as an intelligent and intelligible assistant with sophisticated protections to help secure personal and group information in ways that earn trust.

New insights come from Office 365 Groups and Outlook modern attachments

Microsoft Graph derives intelligence from things like who you work with, what departments your colleagues are from, what sites you work on, the content you share and have in common, and what sites the people around you are using. that which now also includes documents from Office 365 Groups, modern attachments from Outlook, and more. There is business value in all transactions. The breadth of content plays an important role, not only to surface important people and content, it, too, enables a more personalized, relevant experience based on these added signals of content and people interactions.

Improved performance and content freshness

addition to relevance improvements, Microsoft Graph results are returned faster with improved success rates and content freshness (the time it takes for new content to appear within results). Relevance context is now pre-processed and sent along with the query on the search index. All the while maintaining admin and users requirement and expectation of the highest level of data security and privacy.

As we begin roll out of the updated search experience in Delve, we also have our sights on enabling intelligent search from within additional Office 365 applications like SharePoint home in Office 365 and mobile apps, OneDrive for Business and more.

Introducing the IT Roadmap planning tool preview

he answers to many questions in IT start with these two words. “What is the best way to deploy a new operating system?” “Which security configurations should I use in SharePoint or Exchange” “How should we set up our directory services?” Answers to all of these questions depend on what’s important to you, what’s worked in the past and what your expectations or your users’ expectations are.

Those questions also just scratch the surface of the areas covered by Microsoft 365 services. There are a ton of options when you consider Office 365 – including email, intranet, file sharing, voice, apps and more, Windows 10 – including apps, servicing, deployment, security options and more, and Enterprise Mobility + Security – including identity, MDM, PC management, information protection and more.

To help with this, we’ve been working on a new tool called the IT Roadmap for Microsoft 365 – as a way to see your options, target what you want and build long-term set of deployment and configuration plans. The IT Roadmap is a web-based tool built for IT, so it’s different from Microsoft‘s product roadmaps that communicate Microsoft‘s future product plans. The IT Roadmap is about helping you form your plans.

As part of the process, it highlights the capabilities corresponding to all the services represented by Microsoft 365 across 4 levels, each level containing multiple attributes that differentiate it from previous levels. Using the tool, you select the services you want to prioritize, select what best describes how you deliver the service now, and then identify what best describes what you want to do using the Future Level slider.

The red dots above then indicate things to implement, and you can mark items green that are already in-place, or opt-out of items by marking them grey. The tool will calculate the capabilities and mapped features, display links to corresponding how-to content, offer direct links (when possible) to where desired configurations are set in Office 365 or Azure portals, and provide details for getting FastTrack-supported help with your implementation.

Action view for Shared services: identity, security & compliance > Access management

The IT Roadmap will show key options around the core capabilities that span Microsoft 365 workloads, including identity management, messaging, collaboration, intranet and search, PC deployment and management, and meeting services. As options change or capabilities are added, the underlying model will continue to receive updates to corresponding services and technologies.

After you identify your current and set your future states, the IT Roadmap builds you a personalized action plan. This plan is a comprehensive, auto-generated document based on your inputs during the assessment phase and includes:

  • a description of how the IT Roadmap works,
  • a personalized IT Roadmap action plan for IT admins,
  • links to specific configurations and how-to guidance for each highlighted capability,
  • assessment of IT effort, user impact and whether FastTrack assistance is available, and
  • next steps to take once you’ve worked through the IT Roadmap action plan.

The IT Roadmap document is editable, so you can add or remove sections, change formatting or branding elements, assign tasks to individuals or teams, incorporate timelines and more.

Try the IT Roadmap Preview

There are two ways to try the IT Roadmap preview. The screenshots above are from the light version of the IT Roadmap tool and available for anyone to try. The full version – as shown in the Microsoft Mechanics show – is available to Microsoft partners as part of the Business Value Programs. The full version requires partner authentication, saves your state so you can return to it later, offers additional controls to toggle audience-specific tone (IT admin, business manager, security manager, and end user), and has additional navigation and filtering options.

New features of Microsoft Forms September 2017

Teams and Forms Integration 

In Microsoft Teams, you can now use the Microsoft Forms app to quickly conduct a poll in a conversation through the Microsoft Forms bot. By adding a Forms tab, you may invite others to respond to a survey, collaborate on one together, and check results as a team. Microsoft Forms SharePoint web part

In SharePoint, you can now use the Microsoft Forms web part to insert a form directly on your page. Others can take the survey in SharePoint and you can also share survey results with a group of people. This web part can be used in both a communication site and teams site. Share Results with a Link 

You can now share survey results with others through a link. Anyone who has the link can access the summary view of the form responses.sept-3.PNG

Preview URL card

Copy a Forms web address and paste it into a Teams conversation or OWA email. The web address will transform into a user-friendly preview card that contains useful information.sept-4.PNG
